AI is moving fast. Organisations need to move smarter.

The organisations that gain the most from AI won't be those using the most of it — they'll be the ones that anchor innovation to a clear strategic mandate.

AI is moving fast. Organisations need to move smarter.

Over the last few months, I've been spending more time exploring platforms like Claude, Lovable and Base44. The pace at which this space is evolving is fascinating. The tech has moved beyond AI assistants to intelligent workflows, AI agents and now even “super agents” capable of coordinating complex tasks with minimal human intervention. Building these solutions once required significant investment. That landscape is changing rapidly.

The latest AI platforms are making it possible for organisations of all sizes to prototype ideas, automate repetitive tasks and build solutions that were once only achievable with large development teams and budgets. The tech is a great opportunity, but embracing AI shouldn't mean adopting technology simply because it's available.

The organisations that will gain the greatest value are those that embrace innovation while staying anchored to the business strategy.

Start with the As-Is

It starts by looking at the 'As-Is' before planning for the 'To-Be':

  • What does our current operating model look like?
  • Where are the biggest pain points and inefficiencies?
  • What are we trying to solve?
  • Which outcomes are we trying to achieve?
  • How can AI genuinely improve the experience for our people, customers and stakeholders?

Only then should AI become part of the conversation.

The power of a clear mandate

One insight that resonated recently came from a Diary of a CEO podcast featuring Kevin O'Leary. Throughout the conversation, emphasis was placed on the importance of having a clear mandate. The same principle applies to transformation. Transformation programmes should have a clearly defined mandate directly linked to the organisation's strategic vision and objectives.

That mandate becomes the reference point for every decision. It determines where investment should be focused, which initiatives are prioritised, and when to challenge ideas that don't contribute to the intended outcomes.

Where project management and PMO create real value

Their role isn't to slow innovation or introduce unnecessary governance. It's to provide the structure that connects strategy with delivery. Good project management keeps delivery teams focused on implementing the right solutions. PMO provides senior leaders with visibility, constructive challenge and assurance that programmes remain aligned with the original mandate and continue delivering against the organisation's strategic vision.

In a world where AI capabilities are evolving almost weekly, it's easy to be distracted by what's possible. The difference will be organisations that remain disciplined, ensuring investment in AI supports a clear business objective and delivers measurable, sustainable value.

Organisations that succeed won't simply be those using the most AI. They'll be the ones that connect innovation with strategy and turn ambition into measurable outcomes.
